By profession a librarian, Friend has long been an energetic and committed advocate for Open Access. He is also one of the small group of people who attended the 2001 meeting that led to the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI). It was at that meeting that the term Open Access was coined, and a definition of OA agreed.
