Summary:

"For the fourth year, Boston University is participating in the international Open Access Week event, aimed at raising awareness about the potential of 'the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as [necessary],'1 to transform the way we create new knowledge. BU Libraries have endorsed the Boston Library Consortium statement in observance of Open Access Week. (Link forthcoming.) We agree that 'it is vital that content creators, content users, and libraries work together to find common ground to ensure that copyright ‘promote[s] progress in science and the useful arts’ while at the same time providing reasonable compensation for the intellectual efforts expended to create that content.' The statement in its entirety will be available soon on the BLC website. On Tuesday, October 22, Dennis Hart of the General Counsel’s Office will present a CEIT Teaching Talk titled 'Copyright in the Classroom.' The event has a wait list; if you are interested in attending a similar talk in the future, we encourage you to get on the wait list and/or contact CEIT to give them an idea of the demand for a repeat. On Wednesday, October 23, 12-2pm, BU Libraries in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Research and the General Counsel’s Office will give an important presentation on open access as it relates to national mandates, as well as promotion and tenure at BU. A reception will follow. The event is aimed primarily at faculty, but all are invited to attend; RSVP to research@bu.edu. More information about the event can be found here. We hope to see you at one or more of these events. If you’d like to talk further about open access one-on-one, or have us visit a group for a conversation, please email Vika Zafrin, Institutional Repository Librarian, at vzafrin@bu.edu."
