It throws light on  emergence and development of open access initiatives and various declarations in the world.  The types of open access and their characters are given. The gradual increase of journals in DOAJ is shown. The impacts of OA are various facts of the academic community and the challenges for OA are dealt. The OA initiatives in India are listed.”
