Open Access Task Force to hold forum 4/22 โ€“ UNC Office of Faculty Governance 2014-03-28

"The Open Access Task Force will be holding an expert forum to learn about the rights-retention policies that have been adopted by faculty at several peer institutions in recent years. Such policies typically ensure that faculty have the legal rights to publish in the journal of their choice, at no fee, while at the same time ensuring the accessibility of their peer-reviewed manuscripts through an institutional repository. Such policies can provide the researcher with greater reuse rights than are allowed by the copyright transfer agreements provided by many scholarly publishers. The forum will include presentations by two speakers who have been closely involved with the faculty-led open access policies adopted at Duke University (in 2010) and across the entire 10-university University of California system (in 2013). Dr. Chris Kelty is an anthropologist at UCLA whose research focuses on the cultural significance of information technology in science and engineering. Kevin Smith, J.D., is the Director of the Copyright and Scholarly Communications Office at Duke University Libraries and a noted expert on intellectual property in academia. The event will be held on April 22 from 12:00-1:30 pm in the Freedom Forum, 305 Carroll Hall."
