Summary:

“Historein, a Greek English-language history journal which has been published since 1999,is now available electronically, with the support of the National Documentation Centre (EKT).  The move involves making available online all existing 11 issues of the journal, which contain more than 130 articles on historiography – as the history of historical writing is known – and the theory of history. Providing immediate open access to its content reflects the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.  The latest issue of the journal, entitled Politics and History: How to Deal with Tormented Pasts, addresses the question of how to come to terms with dark pasts amid memory laws, history wars, transitional justice and the creation of an international framework of norms regarding the teaching of history at school.  All submissions to Historein, which is published by the Athens-based Cultural and Intellectual History Society, are reviewed by an international panel of academics. The journal, which is also published annually in hardcopy by Nefeli, also carries reviews of the major works appearing on Greek history.  The transition to an open-access journal was implemented by the National Documentation Centre as part of its digital convergence programme, which is co-funded by the state and the European Union’s Regional Development Fund.  The journal will also be available online through the National Information System for Research and Technology, a rich digital resource of 4.5 million pages of electronic repositories, journals and digital libraries.  Nine journal titles now available online due to EKT’s efforts: the Deltion of the Christian Archaeological Society, The Gleaner (published by the Greek Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies), Mnimon (Society for the Study of Modern Hellenism), Makedonika (Society for Macedonian Studies), Byzantina Symmeikta (Institute for Byzantine Research),Tekmeria (Institute of Greek and Roman Antiquity), The Historical Review/La Revue Historique, Research Notebooks and Newsletter (Institute for Neohellenic Research).
