Use the link to access more information about the workshop and the upcoming Berlin Open Access Conference (b10), November 7-8, 2012 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The abstract for the workshop reads as follows: "The discussions around Open Access have started out with the goal to remove barriers that prevent _researchers_ from accessing the research literature. While the vast majority of research articles is still hidden behind paywalls, over 20% of the contemporary scholarly literature is freely available to anyone, including researchers. Given that about half of this amount is available under free licenses (mainly CC BY, with some CC 0 or CC BY-SA), it seems reasonable to start exploring potential use cases for such materials beyond providing access to researchers. Wikimedia projects provide a whole battery of such use cases and can serve as a bridge between the worlds of Open Access, science outreach and Open Education.  Files listed in the Category Open access (publishing) on Wikimedia Commons are all imported, possibly with modifications, from Open Access sources, and most of them have been incorporated into educational content across Wikimedia projects. In total, they receive about 20 million page hits per month.  In this contribution, a number of ways to import Open Access materials onto Wikimedia projects will be presented, along with usage metrics as well as reuse scenarios involving adaptation, remixing and translation of the source materials. Special attention will be paid to content partnerships between the Wikimedia and scholarly communiites, including writing contests and the Topic Pages initiative at PLOS Computational Biology."
