Summary:

"Federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel will release a governmentwide open data policy on Nov. 23, he said Oct. 11 while speaking at the World Government Summit on Open Source in Washington, D.C. 'The policy will require agencies to start buying in different ways, to start building in different ways,' he said. 'That doesn't mean we're choosing a specific vendor or solution...the evolution and the maturity of the standards process in the area of open data is leading the way on that.' As part of the policy, Data.gov will become the central repository to access all live data at agencies, he said. It will become a metadata and application programming interface, or API, key manager catalog. He added that these updates to Data.gov will provide a lightweight way to obtain analytics and crawl agency websites to pull all data into the system."
