British Ecological Society joins open access revolution | Wildlife News

Papers published in the 5 scientific journals published by the British Ecological Society will now feature in the open access journal Ecology and Evolution that is maintained by the science publishers Wiley. The arrangement will see Ecology and Evolution become one of the leading ecological online open access libraries with 11 of the top 20 ecological journals featuring in Ecology and Evolution. In total the online journal features 16 titles contributing to the publication. Ecology and Evolution was first published in September 2011 and has since that first issue published over 250 ecological papers that are free to access by students and the public alike. The journal publishes the papers under the  Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) License which allows others to use, distribute and reproduce the work provide the correct citation is given. The 5 British Ecological Society (BES) journals that join the stable will give the open access publication a big boost as each of the 5 BES journals all feature in the top 20% of ecological journals according to the Institute for Scientific Information... Because the papers are provided free of charge to the public and other researchers the way in which the journals are funded is different to traditional journals. Researchers who submit papers to the journals will now pay a fee if their work is accepted. This fee will help to fund the journal and peer review costs.
