Summary:

"Translational Medicine is the process of turning biological discoveries into drugs and/or medical devices that can help patients better, faster, and also provide a better use of financial resources. It is one of the foremost issues in healthcare today. The 'translation' of basic scientific research to practicable diagnostic procedure and therapies provides meaningful improvements in physical, mental, or social health outcomes. This 'bench to bedside' process begins with collections of data; sharing of experiences; and most importantly 'open exchange of information'. Open exchange of information is one of the many important parts of supporting Transitional Medicine. An open access repository would be a resource for our hospitals to learn about and discuss the impact of research in hospitals across Illinois. An Illinois Open Access Repository would focus on what Illinois healthcare professionals would contribute to Translational Medicine...  A Librarians’ role positions us to help identify what kind of information may be most valuable in an open access repository since we are often asked for the kind of information not found in the 'usual' indexing databases or other resources. As you approach this survey, try to focus on what happens to the information we, as library professionals provide to our physicians and nurses once it has left the custody of the library and how it is transformed into new practices across Illinois. Consult with others in your institutions about the responses to the questions to get to the most helpful information for this survey."
