The use of proprietary technology limits the scope and accessibility of water quality data, making it difficult for researchers, water managers or private citizens to build services and applications on top of existing knowledge. Which is a shame, especially considering that drinking water supply is bound to become a key issue in the near future. Over a billion people do not currently have easy access to drinkable water; many more face significant contamination of their water systems.
