Summary:

"The Australian Open Access Support Group (AOASG) has become a signatory to the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) ‘Statement about embargo periods’ - https://www.coar-repositories.org/activities/advocacy-leadership/aligning-repository-networks-across-regions/statement-about-embargo-periods/
AOASG joins other international associations including SPARC, the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences and LIBER, the Association of European Research Libraries in endorsing the policies and practices that enable Open Access. Any delay in the open availability of research articles curtails scientific progress and stifles innovation, placing unnecessary constraints in delivering the benefits of research back to the public.
We consider the use of embargo periods as a transitional mechanism to help facilitate a wholesale shift towards Open Access and mechanisms for reducing or eliminating embargo periods should be included in any Open Access policy. If embargo periods are adopted they should be no more than 6 months for life and physical sciences and 12 months for social sciences and humanities."
