Summary:

"Contemporary academic publishing landscape is fraught with challenges that undermine the integrity and equity of scientific dissemination. Central to this issue is the reliance on unpaid peer review, paid publications through “open access”, on the backbone of academic institutions insistence on the number of publications by the research fraternity. Academics are expected to evaluate manuscripts without compensation, a practice justified as a service to the scientific community. However, this expectation persists even as publishers accrue substantial revenues. For instance, major academic publishers collectively earned over $10 billion in 2023 from their peer-reviewed journals (1)."
