mathematics social history - Why have Princeton University's free online Einstein archives disappeared? - History of Science and Mathematics Stack Exchange

Summary:

"Sites like Digital Einstein aren't just shut down for no reason. Somebody, somewhere, must have made a decision, and documented a justification for why it was being done. It's not enough to say "Oh, we're replacing it with something better", because that doesn't explain why the existing site was taken offline before the replacement was ready. Somewhere at Princeton there surely must be a document explaining the rationale for taking down the site on 15 August 2025, given that the replacement isn't //expected// until some time in 2026. And there must surely also be some rationale given for the new system having no open-access content, even though a lot of the main existing documents are now going to be public domain. Someone must know what's been going on, and why."
