Summary:

"Hal Abelson’s work promotes knowledge of all forms as a public good, the impact of his work touches most forms of knowledge worldwide. Hal’s work has focused on communities working together to advance and support knowledge.

Through MIT OpenCourseWare Hal helped democratize access to educational materials and catalyzed the global open education movement. This work collectively embodies all of OEGlobal’s principles. The non-proprietary sharing, accessibility, affordability and customizability, enable educators and learners to adapt and reuse content in diverse contexts.

Through MIT’s Open Access policy he helped to set a precedent for academic institutions globally. The development of the policy reinforced OE Global’s principles of transparency and shared decision-making in scholarly communication. In addition, sharing open access to research supports the principles of affordability, non-proprietary sharing, accessibility and transparency.

Through Creative Commons, Hal helped establish the legal and cultural frameworks that underpin open sharing today. Creative Commons licenses enable participatory and collaborative creation and reuse of knowledge.

Through the Free Software Foundation and Public Knowledge, Hal championed non-proprietary, meritocratic, transparent, and community-driven approaches to software development and information access. His advocacy has ensured that the tools and platforms supporting open education and open science remain open themselves—free to use, modify and distribute."
