Summary:

Abstract:  Hughes asserts that my presentation today is an analysis of the Catholic open access (OA) religion journals that I've been collecting. But before I do that, some context and background is in order. In February and March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down our libraries and forced most of us to work from home while still providing essential library services like instruction, lending, and cataloging. Most of us were caught off guard and adapted as best we could. In terms of collection development, we invested more heavily in electronic materials and less in print materials. I've been attracted to the open access movement and fascinated by it ever since I discovered it in library school. Open access appeals to me as an idealist, but also, and more importantly, as a Catholic. OA aligns rather well with Catholic social teaching, especially the principles of subsidiarity, the universal destination of goods, and the common good.
