Summary:

"The UKRI open access policy applies to monographs, book chapters and edited collections published on or after 1 January 2024. All long-form outputs in-scope must be made open access (OA) within 12 months of publication. UKRI have ring-fenced approximately £3.5 million to support a range of open access models. This includes subscribe to open agreements (also known as ‘diamond OA’, collective models, or ‘free to read, free to publish’), as well as Book Processing Charges (BPCs), and Chapter Processing Charges (CPCs). Read more about UKRI’s open access fund for monographs, book chapters and edited collections Jisc is negotiating a number of Diamond OA monograph agreements with major book publishers. Diamond OA uses community funding to help spread the burden of cost across multiple institutions who collectively fund OA publication at a far lower rate than an individual BPC. Traditional publishers will be asked to include and prioritise UKRI funded titles within these collections and to allow a green backstop self-archiving route to be applied. This will allow funded researchers to achieve compliance within 12 months of publication if the collection has not been fully funded and the UKRI funded title would otherwise be published behind the paywall...."
