Open-and-Shut Case: Do Open-Access Journals Enhance Scientific Progress?: Scientific American

Connotea Imports 2012-07-31

Summary:

PS: A very superficial once-over not worthy of Scientific American. Leaves five false impressions: (1) that all OA journals charge publication fees, when most do not; (2) that PLoS is the "only major" OA journal publisher; that (3) that articles on deposit in OA repositories are only accessible to users "with sign-on privileges"; (4) that OA mandates at funding agencies and universities require gold rather than green OA; and (5) that disagreements about the "OA impact advantage" are disagreements about whether OA advances scientific research.
