Why are so many people confused about Open Access?

Connotea Imports 2012-08-01

Summary:

The two most widespread confusions about OA are (1) conflating give-away work (mainly refereed research journal articles, which are OA's sole target) with non-give-away work (such as most books) and (2) conflating Green OA self-archiving of articles published in conventional journals with publishing articles in Gold OA journals (usually wrongly assuming OA means Gold OA).
