As our ability to share information increases every year, so too does the threat that our sensitive or secret technologies will be stolen by other nations. It is an important national security issue that requires accurate reporting in order to address issues related to stolen tech. The United States Defense Security Service (DSS) has released their annual publication, "Targeting U.S. Technologies: A Trend Analysis of Cleared Industry Reporting". These reports aim to track how many illegal or unauthorized requests for sensitive technology information are made a year and to sort out where the collectors come from.

The number of reported cases continues to rise, but none more than reported incidents from East Asia and the Pacific. This region was the origin of almost half of all reported incidents. The increase in incidences from East Asia and the Pacific could be tied to recent political changes and upheavals in the region. Numerous regimes have modified their approaches to strategic defense.
