A Preliminary Analysis of Network Outages During Hurricane Sandy

The University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute has released a report about Internet outages during Hurricane Sandy. The report finds that that network outages in the United States doubled after the Sandy's landfall and subsequently took around four days to recover to normal levels. Researchers discovered these results by pinging a sample of American IP addresses.

The report notes that New York and New Jersey represented the bulk of outage locations that could be positively identified. Some additional outages could not be pinpointed to a specific location within the United States but were nevertheless elevated beyond the baseline. The investigators will continue to improve their network monitoring system for use during future disasters.
