As a child, Nancy played "kick the can" with her neighbors. She taught her children and then her grandchildren to play the game. Now her great-grandchildren spend long summer evenings playing kick the can. During World War II, Nancy worked summers at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, where she met her future husband, Tenal Cooley. She went back to finish a degree in speech pathology at Grinnell College in Iowa while Tenal was shipped out to Europe. Two years later, they were married in her childhood home on August 3, 1946.
