2016 HERBLOCK AWARD FOR EDITORIAL CARTOONING
Tom The Dancing Bug Blog 2016-02-24
Congratulations to Mark Fiore, the winner of the 2016 Herblock Award for Editorial Cartooning. Mark is a fantastic and innovative cartoonist, and very deserving of the award.
I'm honored that Tom the Dancing Bug was the Finalist (Runner-Up).
"This year’s finalist is Ruben Bolling, pen name for Ken Fisher. He is the author of the weekly comic strip “Tom the Dancing Bug” and will receive a $5,000 after-tax cash prize. Judge Peter Kuper stated 'For decades Ruben Bolling has consistently produced full page comics that find new angles of attack on familiar subjects. With subtlety, yet tremendous humor, he constructs each comic without any wasted space to build to surprising conclusions. Many of his strips take on several topics at the same time and over the years he has honed his art to deliver these ideas with great verve.'"
Thanks to Peter Kuper for those very kind words.
My aunt worked for The Washington Post (on the Wedding Announcements, I believe), and when she saw that I had an interest in cartooning (Peanuts, Spider-Man, Mad Magazine, etc.), she got the Washington Post editorial cartoonist Herb Block to sign one of his books as a gift to me. It was a collection of his Watergate work, and it was probably my first exposure to editorial cartooning.
Thank you to the Foundation and judges for the honor. And the cash.
