Define Groups in the Mixer

As I understand it at the moment the groupings in the mixer are somehow decided automatically by Sibelius. When opening a file created in a previous version of Sibelius I often find many instruments no longer attached to a group. The only way I have found to solve this is to laboriously create new instrument staves, copy the old part to it and then delete the original. It would be handy to define ones own grouping. Perhaps the most elegant (while perhaps not the most flexible) would be for the groups in the mixer to reflect the brackets at the beginning of the systems in the score.
