Next-Generation notation software innovation

New Ideas : Sibelius Feedback Community 2017-11-12

Summary:

I wanted to bring to your attention an innovative use of new Liquid Crystal 'Paper' displays, which may become the optimal input device for next generation (polychromatic/chromatic) music notation software. Conventional music notation software seems unnecessarily cumbersome with unintuitive, brand-exclusive keyboard shortcuts and nested submenus. Once an easier notation input system becomes available, present iterations of notation software won't be able to compete with its intuitive and elegant ease of use. With the creation of score/staff templates, you could directly write a score, without being restricted to the programmed capabilities, work flow and limitations of software like Sibelius or Finale. These current notation software systems are better developed for deep score editing and, in this sense, seem complementary to a new input system. With a programmable color strip on the side of the input display surface, pitch colors could be written in real time within a digital notation system. The Boogie Board Blackboard uses a new digital writing surface called Liquid Crystal Paper. And its price is under $45. While it doesn't appear that the current generation of this device has color capability yet, color implementation can't be far off. I hope that Sibelius can become a leader in next-generation music notation systems. It is a great editor in need of an elegant notation input interface. http://www.coolthings.com/boogie-board-blackboard-reusable-writing-surface/
