ELI5: How do rich people use donations as tax write-offs to save money? Wouldn't it be more financially beneficial to just keep the money and have it taxed?

I always hear people say "he only made the donation so he could write it off their taxes"...but wouldn't you save more money by just keeping the money and allowing it to be taxed at 40% or whatever the rate is?
