Le développement des prépublications (The development of preprints)

Summary:

From Google's English:

"Prepublications are the subject of a report by a Knowledge Exchange working group.  After a brief history, the authors give a definition: version of a research article, usually before peer review and publication in a journal. They show the benefits: accelerate the broadcast to a large audience, have visibility, improve peer review, represent a direct way to prioritize research, foster culture of sharing and communication within scientific communities, and publish freely for authors and freely access for readers. A table shows the progression of the number of preprints, especially in the field of life sciences, with an emphasis since 2015. The authors present the many open archive creations, both thematic and general, with an explosion since 2017, and institutional development of policies that take into account preprints. They mention the services set up around them. They note their growing place in citations asking the question of their role in relation to journals. They list a number of initiatives that install preprints in the system of scientific publication.  They note the gaps and barriers that still exist, including the lack of pre-publication knowledge of researchers, which could be lifted by a good practice guide, the need to clarify prepublication- peer reviews and to give them a formal role in a system where peer review and peer review dominate. The report's authors note that any change in the preprints ecosystem will need to consider all stakeholders and implications for the research and publication process. Finally, they cite some economic models already in place and raise the question of the integration of all these preproduction servers in the infrastructure of scientific communication."
