Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the way of collaboration between University Press and the Open Access movement is possible. The starting point is the history of the main Italian and international UPs. The focus will coincide with their relationship with universities, their role in the dissemination of knowledge, their editorial production and their position in the market. This will move on to the principles governing OA. The birth of the movement, its evolution and the policies that govern it. The various actors who currently discuss the advantages, disadvantages and possible business models to be adopted to allow the widespread dissemination of the model. Finally, the relationship between UP and OA. The comparison between the production in OA of the different university publishing houses and, therefore, between the different policies adopted in this regard.
