Individuals educated in data science at the undergraduate and graduate levels are vital to meeting needs across all sectors: industry, government, and academia. The core specialists in Big Data include data science researchers, information scientists, statisticians, computer scientists, database and software programmers, curators, librarians, and archivists with specialization in data science. The National Science Board emphasized the importance of these experts to the successful management and analyses digital data collections. Research investments are needed to expand the current pipeline of support to the field of data science and provide direction on the necessary competencies for the development and training of future core data scientists. The National Science Foundation Research Traineeship program, for example, has a priority interdisciplinary research theme on Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (DESE).
