Five Riddles כמה חידות

Here are five riddles. I learned them from Maya Bar-Hillel. Can you solve them? (We had several earlier posts with riddles, such as Two Math Riddles; Greg’s Dinosaurs Riddle; and The Ultimate Riddle. )

1. Two old friends are standing together on a hilltop, in complete silence. Nora is facing north, and Sara is facing south. Suddenly Nora asks: “Why are you smiling, Sara?” Explain briefly how Nora saw Sara’s smile.
2. Two men play five checker games. Each wins an even number of games, with no ties. How is this possible?
3. In our market, a small potato bag costs 5 taka, a medium potato bag costs 7 taka, and a large potato bag costs 9 taka. However, a single potato costs 15 taka. Please explain.
4. Two Israelis are sharing a pizza, the older Israeli is the father of the younger Israeli, but the younger Israeli is not the son of the older Israeli. How is it possible?
5. A big brown cow is lying down in the middle of a country road. The streetlights are not on, the moon and stars are not out, and the skies are heavily clouded. A truck is driving towards the cow at full speed, its headlights off. Yet the driver sees the cow from afar easily and stops in time. How is that possible?

Maya Bar-Hillel is a famous Israeli psychologist and a long-time friend. I will tell about the context in which Maya is interested in these riddles at some later post, but now is a good opportunity to wish Maya a happy eightieth birthday!
