How to Submit a Book Proposal

Duke University Press welcomes the submission of book proposals in the areas in which we publish. We ask that you submit your proposal to only one editor. If your proposal seems more appropriate for another editor's area of acquisition, it will be passed along to him or her for consideration.

Your proposal should include:

  1. A cover letter describing the project and noting the anticipated length of the manuscript and the anticipated date of completion
  2. A prospectus (with detailed chapter outlines)
  3. A CV or résumé
  4. One or (if available) two sample chapters
  5. Essay abstracts (for edited collections

Please send a printed copy of your proposal by mail.

If you would like the proposal to be returned to you, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Do not send any irreplaceable materials.

If you are sending illustrations, please send photocopies or duplicates.

You will receive an e-mail acknowledgment when we receive your proposal.

We attempt to contact authors with a decision within eight weeks. However, due to the number of proposals we receive, it may take longer for an editor to send a response. If you have not heard from us within three months, please follow up by e-mail.

Editors who would like to see more materials or a full manuscript will contact you. Please do not submit your complete manuscript until an editor has invited you to do so.
