One of the deliverables of Copim's Open Book Futures project is to establish a ‘knowledge base’ (or equivalent) to provide comprehensive resources on alternative funding models and modes of publishing, acquiring and archiving open access books, alongside new training and guidance on archiving and preservation best practice. The deliverable states that we will (a) develop resources for stakeholders, (b) consolidate existing resources, (c) promote business models best practice, and (d) showcase project work on metadata, experimental publishing and archiving.
A scoping exercise and accompanying report established there would be limited value in creating brand new resources, training materials etc. Instead, the most helpful resource we could create for the community, building upon our reputation as a recognised sector expert in OA book publishing, and using our international network of researchers, universities, librarians, and publishers, would be more of a 'guide of guides'.
Copim Compass was launched in April 2025. It is built on BookStack, a self-hosted, easy-to-use documentation platform for organising and storing information similar to MediaWiki or DokuWiki. This flyer was developed for use at conferences as promotional material on exhibitions stands and booths. It was first shared at the DCDC2025 conference in Durham (29-31 July, 2025).
