OA Book Policy-a-thon: Taking Action to Expand the Knowledge Base | Open Access Books Network

Summary:

On 24 June 2025, the OABN hosted a practical event to equip members of the community with the skills needed to upload new or updated policies to the Knowledge Base, a database that contains hundreds of funder and institutional policy documents from 39 countries in the European Research Area. You can view a recording of this event below.

The policies in the Knowledge Base were initially gathered by the PALOMERA project, but now that PALOMERA has concluded, keeping the Knowledge Base up to date will be a community effort and everyone is invited to get involved. At the event, our speakers Niels Stern and Sinziana Paltineanu from the OAPEN Foundation explained the background to the Knowledge Base, how and why it was put together, and then Sinziana talked us step-by-step through the process of uploading policies to the Knowledge Base.

Next, we had a chance to ask questions and to upload policies with Niels and Sinziana on hand to guide us. They answered our questions including ‘Can I write a policy abstract in any language?’, ‘Can a record be deleted after submission?’, and ‘Can I submit a policy from a country outside Europe?’. The answers to all these questions and more have been written up into a Frequently Asked Questions document that is hosted on the Knowledge Base for everyone to consult.
