Summary:
Thoth Open Metadata is pleased to announce the forthcoming launch of Thoth 1.0, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of its open metadata infrastructure for open access book publishing.
Following extensive development work, in the coming months Thoth Open Metadata will implement a series of substantial improvements designed to streamline and strengthen publishers' metadata workflows. New components and upgrades will include:
- Expanded Thoth data model and systems architecture, including Markdown and JATS XML inputs, additional metadata fields for accessibility metadata, and associated materials such as book reviews and awards;
- Comprehensive redesign of the Thoth platform, improving usability, supporting more effective handling of chapter-level information, and offering interface languages beyond English;
- Direct upload of content (book and cover files) in the platform via drag-and-drop;
- Bulk ingest of metadata, allowing publishers to import backlist and frontlist titles directly to Thoth using CSV and ONIX formats;
- Multilingual support, enabling publishers to record and manage metadata in multiple languages in parallel, better serving non-English and multilingual publishing contexts;
- A new identity management system, with updated login processes including Multi-Factor-Authentication (MFA) and multiple users per account;
- An expanded set of services, featuring website hosting with custom design and usage metrics for repositories that Thoth distributes to.
More information on these improvements will be unveiled during the official launch of Thoth 1.0, which will take place during the Copim Conference, held as a hybrid event on 26–27 February 2026 at Loughborough University London Campus (Stratford, London, UK) and online. The conference will additionally feature discussions on open access book publishing and community-led approaches to open scholarship. More details and conference registration are available on the Copim Community’s blog post.
As Thoth Open Metadata looks ahead to 2026, we remain committed to working collaboratively with publishers and the wider community to improve processes, workflows, and infrastructures for open access book publishing. Further updates will follow in the coming weeks.
