Summary:

Most librarians who champion open access have, at some point, had to justify or defend the spend. Who is this money for? Why this model and not another? What do we stop funding to make room for this? These questions rarely have easy or tidy answers, and the case that persuades finance committees or senior management is not always the one that best reflects our values. In this Open Access Week session, we hear from two institutions that have made that case in practice. Hannah Crago, previously from the University of Essex, now at the University of Cambridge, will discuss her experiences in helping the library to build institutional support for OA. Louise Otting from TU Delft will talk about the university's dedicated fund and how it came to exist. Caroline from the Open Book Collective will bring both together in the wider landscape of collective, community-governed funding for Diamond OA books.
