The post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the project PHIL_OS (“A Philosophy of Open Science for Diverse Research Environments”) based at the Exeter Centre for the Study of the Life Sciences (Egenis). PHIL_OS will develop an empirically grounded philosophy of Open Science [OS] that emphasises the diversity of research environments around the world and articulates the conditions under which OS can leverage such diversity to promote good research practice. This ERC funded post is available from 1 January 2022 to 31 August 2025. The successful applicant will be responsible for Work Package 1: Epistemic diversity and the notion of research environment and will collaborate with the PI towards investigating how conceptions of research environments affect existing accounts of the relationship between conditions and outcomes of knowledge production. This framework will be articulated through dialogue with philosophical scholarship on epistemic diversity, the role of social and material resources in knowledge production, and findings by the project team.

The post will include: the conduct of research and publication of research papers; extensive and regular engagement with the project team and partners; international presentations and dialogue with peers; the organisation of a project workshop; and support for research activities at Egenis.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to work closely with the PI and project team; develop research objectives, projects and proposals; engage with the variety of sources, methods and disciplines of relevance to the project; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in the philosophy, history and/or social studies of science and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes, methodologies and publications.
