Post-publication open peer review experiment
OPERAS 2020-02-20

A final report on the results of the post-publication open peer review experiment that took place from October 2018 to June 2019 within the HIRMEOS project has been published. The project has included the implementation of an annotation service on the OpenEdition Books platform. In order to support the implementation of this tool on the platform, an experimental phase was set up. The purpose of this experiment was to explore, through annotation, new open peer review practices (post-publication) on open access monographs in the humanities and social sciences.
The results of the experiment are presented in the report “A post-publication open peer review experiment with annotations” by Claire Dandieu, assistant editor in charge of the project. The report includes a brief bibliographic inventory to facilitate the understanding of the framework within which this project was carried out. It then presents the project itself and describes the main steps. Finally, it present the results obtained and attempts to draw conclusions and recommendations.
The report comes up with three general recommendations for publishers:
- build communities
- find incentive factors
- provide support and lead
It furthermore recommends that publishing platforms implement the annotation tool directly into the platforms’ internal system in order to make this available to everyone and encourage its usage.
