This 12-month tenure-track position reports to the Head of Library Learning Services and will collaboratively coordinate Penn State University Libraries’ initiatives to design, create, and integrate meaningful learning resources for residential, online, and blended learning environments. The successful candidate will contribute to the Library Learning Services department’s goal of leading within the Libraries through learner-centered, innovative, structured, and strategic programs and to the Library Learning Services department’s efforts to create inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning environments, to integrate information literacy into foundational learning experiences, and to transform teaching and learning in the Libraries and at Penn State.

Responsibilities and Duties:

The Learning Design and Open Education Engagement Librarian will collaboratively create the strategy for and lead the design, development, use, and assessment of web-based learning objects and educational materials, including tutorials, videos, infographics, and LibGuides.  You will work closely with Library Learning Services and other Libraries and University partners, including colleagues from campus and subject libraries, to consult on learning resource design and collaboratively lead a cohesive approach to integrating Libraries’ learning resources into Penn State curricula in residential, online, and blended learning environments, including the integration of the Libraries’ presence in Canvas, Penn State’s learning management system. In order to connect the University Libraries’ teaching and learning initiatives with Penn State’s larger initiatives related to open and affordable educational materials, you will work closely with Libraries’ and University partners to support librarians, faculty, and instructional designers interested in creating, adapting, adopting, or otherwise supporting open and affordable course content and associated curriculum design and revision.  This includes developing, implementing, and facilitating workshops and presentations on the pedagogical practices related to creating and using open educational resources and actively participating in discussions related to open and affordable course content to ensure open communication and collaboration with relevant university units.  As a member of the Library Learning Services team, you will support the Libraries’ teaching, learning, and student engagement initiatives, including teaching information literacy instruction sessions as needed; participating in outreach and student engagement initiatives; and participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Library Learning Services mission and strategic priority areas. Additionally, you will collaborate with Library Learning Services team members to provide support, consulting, training, and communications to library faculty, staff, and units in order to enhance the instructional efficiency and learning outcomes of University Libraries.  You will pursue professional development and learning opportunities to keep current on trends and developments in open pedagogy, instructional design, instructional technology, teaching, learning, and information literacy.

This position requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in a relevant subject area combined with relevant experience; knowledge of issues, strategies, and best practices in the areas of instructional design, information literacy, assessment, pedagogy, and open educational resources; demonstrated understanding of ethical and social issues in academic and research libraries; experience collaborating with library professionals and contributing to a supportive and rewarding team culture; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to plan, coordinate, and implement effective projects; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; creative, energetic, and collaborative work style; excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation and teamwork skills; and ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure.
