Job-Specific Responsibilities

The individual in this position will assist the Associate Director of Scholarly Communication at the Countway Library in a variety of digital initiatives and open science activities that support students, faculty, and staff at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and collaborative projects with colleagues throughout the Harvard Library system.

The Digital Scholarship Librarian will provide services, support, and instruction to the Harvard Longwood Campus community as part of the Harvard Library’s wide-ranging efforts to advance access and dissemination of scholarship produced and consumed by Harvard University. Understanding and supporting the key digital technologies which are central to current trends in research production, publication, and dissemination, will be required attributes for the incumbent in this role. Furthermore, the Digital Scholarship Librarian will lead the Countway Library’s participation in the Harvard Library’s Institutional Repository (DASH), NIH PubMed Central deposits, open data initiatives, and research assessment tools.

As a key service point within the Digital Scholarship & Scholarly Communications Unit at the Countway Library, the Digital Scholarship Librarian will provide outreach & education on tools that ensure digital scholarship is curated, described, indexed, and accessible.  This includes (but not limited to) bibliographic management tools, publication submissions, bibliometrics, preprint/postprint repositories, data repositories, collaborative online workspaces, building/managing digital collections, and other duties as assigned.

Furthermore, the Digital Scholarship Librarian will assist Harvard researchers and grants administrators with reporting (and troubleshooting) scholarly impact within NIH progress reports (RPPR and MyNCBI Bibliography), SciENcv, and ORCID. Assisting Harvard scholars with managing researcher/author profiles, assessing academic impact, and the licensing (and technical) nuances of sharing scholarship throughout the scholarly communication research cycle will be central to this role.

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited advanced degrees in a related discipline, such as Instructional Technology or Health Informatics. Minimum of three years of relevant experience required, preferably in digital technologies and institutional repositories within academic libraries.

Additional Qualifications

• Understanding of scholarly communication trends, open access, and some inherent challenges of sharing digital scholarship online.
• Knowledge of public access policies and data management requirements for federal grants and publishers.
• Natural ability to work in a highly collaborative, culturally diverse environment.
• Comfortable in an unguided exploration of new technologies, and able to think creatively to meet current and future library challenges.
• Familiarity with statistical software and/or programming languages that can assist users to visualize data and/or transform datasets.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organizational skills and project management skills
• Instruction and research experience within an academic library
• Work experience with institutional repositories
• Familiarity with copyright and accessibility related to digital scholarship and/or digital publishing projects
