The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seeks creative and collaborative applicants for the Center for Black Digital Research (CBDR) Scholarship Librarian. This person will play a key leadership role in developing and coordinating scholarly activities and digital research initiatives in the Center for Black Digital Research. This position, supported by the Provost in collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts, will coordinate efforts in digital scholarship with the Center’s faculty, co-directors, and a managing director. Librarians, staff, and students across the University, as well as community members and external institutional partners, are also key to the Center’s philosophy of engagement. This is a tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Head of Research Informatics and Publishing in the University Libraries, home to the Center.

Major Responsibilities: Lead a community of practice with leaders of individual CBDR projects. Develop tool kits of resources that are interoperable across CBDR projects as well as meeting the needs of individual CBDR projects. Manage budgets and grants along the CBDR directors and administrator. Participate in grant writing and reporting. Coordinate the CBDR fellows. Supervise and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student project work with the project coordinators and faculty directors. Communicate with appropriate university administrators and national directors of digital projects at various institutions. Help coordinate metadata creation, editing, and interoperability. Serve as a team lead for selected faculty digital research and teaching projects. Help coordinate instruction, production, and outreach activities among team of librarians, data specialists, developers. Plan, track, and communicate resources, tasks, and processes for projects to build capacity.

Required Qualifications: Requires a Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. Minimum of two years experience working in an academic setting. Significant experience with nineteenth-century African American subject areas. For example: undergraduate/graduate degree(s) in African American studies, Africana studies, American studies, history, English or other area, with an emphasis in African American content. Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a member of a large, diverse, multi-disciplinary and interinstitutional team. Commitment to collaborative ethos and horizontal management with a record of working in such structured projects or environments. Additionally, the candidate should have substantial experience in: Developing and managing budgets, reporting, and audits. Managing or participating in fundraising campaigns from ideation to implementation to collection and receipts. Project management experience with a track record of running parallel large and small projects. Web design and development, with a track record leading projects to implementation. Familiarity with content management systems, including but not limited to WordPress and Omeka. Familiarity with descriptive metadata standards with a particular understanding of how archives can be inclusive/exclusive of communities, histories and narratives. Digital technologies, archives, and public humanities/history. A track record in social change organizations, practices or projects. Communicating between creators and technologists on development projects. Working with and publishing digital collections of hidden histories with examples of digital scholarship produced.
