Emeritus Professor Anthony (Tony) Reid FAHA FBA: 1939 – 2025
Australian Academy of the Humanities 2025-06-12
Tony was elected to the Academy in 1987. He was an outstanding historian of Southeast Asia with interests in nationalism, Chinese diaspora and economic history, and latterly the relation between geology and deep history.
He was the Australian National University’s (ANU) first full professor of Southeast Asian History, as well as founding director of the Asia Research Institute of NUS, Singapore. He was awarded the Fukuoka Prize in 2002, and the Life Achievement Award of the Association of Asian Studies in 2011.
The ANU’s Anthony Reid Prize in Southeast Asian Studies, and the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) Reid Prize are both available due to Tony’s generous funding.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
An obituary is being prepared by the Fellowship and will be available in due course.
