Dr Peter Hambly FAHA CPA: 1935 – 2025

Australian Academy of the Humanities 2025-06-15

Peter was elected to the Academy in 2009. His research explored 19th century French literature, focusing on post-romantic poetry, prose and social philosophy.

He ventured into neglected byways such as periodicals and newspapers, rescuing many long-forgotten texts belonging by right to the canon of several major poets. His publications amount to a major body of work on Banville, Gautier, Heredia, Mallarmé and others.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.

An obituary is being prepared by Professor Emerita Jean Fornasiero FAHA and will be available in due course.
