Vale Emeritus Professor Christopher Wallace-Crabb AM FAHA 1934 – 2025

Australian Academy of the Humanities 2025-12-17

Christopher was elected to the Academy in 1984 as a distinguished poet and scholar of English. Christopher authored over 25 poetry collections, dozens of essays, and edited several anthologies. His poetry deftly explored aspects of what it means to be human with humour, sensitivity, and at times, absurdity, challenging how we think about ourselves and each other, and how to live well.

Christopher was Professor Emeritus in the Australian Centre of the University of Melbourne, of which he was a founding director. During his long and distinguished career, he was a Harkness Fellow at Yale University, and the Harvard University Chair of Visiting Professor of Australian Studies.

In 2011, Christopher was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the arts, and in 2015, he was awarded the Melbourne Prize for Literature.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.

An obituary is being prepared by the Fellowship and will be available in due course.
