Andrew was elected to the Academy in 1991 as an internationally acclaimed linguist. His main research interests were the Austronesian and Papuan languages and associated cultures, and in the nature of linguistic competence.

Andrew completed dictionaries of Wayan (an Oceanic language of Western Fiji), Gela (Solomon Is.), and of Kalam (a Papuan language of Papua New Guinea).

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
