Registrations open for our 50th Symposium

Australian Academy of the Humanities 2019-08-20

  • What future is there for the past?
  • How do we ensure that new technologies enhance human flourishing?
  • How do we create more liveable cities through civic cultures?
  • What does the future have in store for the humanities, and what can the humanities offer the future?

These questions and many more will be at the heart of our 50th anniversary Symposium – Humanising the Future – to be held at The Edge, State Library of Queensland, Brisbane from 13-15 November 2019.

This event brings together perspectives from philosophy and ethics, history, classics, languages and linguistics, urban planning, museology, architecture, cultural studies, musicology, and the creative and cultural industries.

Order of Events

Wednesday 13 November

Join us for the Symposium curtain-raiser, the 9th Hancock Lecture, which will be presented by Clint Bracknell (Edith Cowan University) at 5pm at the Griffith University Art Museum, South Bank Brisbane. Clint will focus on his interdisciplinary approach to enhance the revitalisation of endangered Noongar language and song in the south coast region of Western Australia.

Thursday 14 November

Day one of the Symposium will commence at 9am at The Edge, State Library of Queensland South Bank. The 50th Academy Lecture will be delivered by President Joy Damousi FASSA FAHA at 4:30pm with a reception to follow.

Friday 15 November

The Symposium will resume at 9am, and will conclude with a reflection on the past, present and future for the humanities in Australia – including a keynote presentation by former Academy president Lesley Johnson AM FAHA, and a panel discussion with the Vice-Chancellors of Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland.
