Fellows recognised in 2020 Australia Day Honours

The Academy warmly congratulates three of its Fellows who have been awarded honours in this year’s Australia Day Honours list.

Emeritus Professor Richard Broome FRHSV FAHA was awarded Member (AM) in the General Division for significant service to education in the field of history, and to historical groups. His research focusses on Australian and Indigenous history. Richard served on the History Institute of Victoria board for 10 years, being President from 1995-96, and was journal editor for the Victorian Historical Journal. He was consultant to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991 and authored brochures for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission. The author of 14 books, Richard was the winner of the Fellowship of Australian Writers Local History Prize (1987), the NSW Premier’s Australian History Prize (2006) and the Victorian Community History Awards (2007).

Professor Harriet Edquist Hon FRAIA FAHA was awarded Member (AM) in the General Division for significant service to architectural history and design, and to higher education. She was Head of the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT from 2001 to 2007 and has been the President of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand and the inaugural President of Automotive Historians Australia. She is the Foundation Director of the RMIT Design Archives, a collection of historical and contemporary Melbourne design practices. Harriet has curated a number of significant design-based exhibitions including The Stony Rises Project (2010) The Lost Modernist (2011) Free, Secular and Democratic: Building the Public Library 1853-1913 (2013) and Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car (2015).

Emeritus Professor John Fitzgerald FAHA, former President of the Academy (2014-17) was awarded Member (AM) in the General Division for significant service to higher education, particularly in the field of Chinese studies. His research interests centre on Chinese politics and history; philanthropy and social investment in Australia, USA, China and Asia; and multiculturalism and Chinese diaspora in Australia. John has held honorary positions in the Asian Studies Association of Australia, the Chinese Studies Association of Australia, the Melbourne China Study Group, and the Asia Education Foundation. He has also worked in an advisory capacity with National Library of Australia, the Australian Research Council and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
