Applications now open for our 2021 grants and awards

Every year the Academy offers a series of prestigious grants and awards as part of our ongoing commitment to fostering and promoting the highest quality humanities research and supporting the next generation of scholars and practitioners.

This year we are offering the following opportunities:

• Max Crawford Medal
• John Mulvaney Fellowship
• Humanities Travelling Fellowships
• Publication Subsidy Scheme

These grants and awards are now open and will close at AEST 5:00pm Monday 26 April, 2021. Applications can be submitted via our website. 

We recognise that due to the ongoing restrictions to international and domestic travel, and disruptions to the working lives of many researchers, changes to research plans may be unavoidable. In response to this, we have introduced some changes to eligible research activities and expenses in light of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. Further details can be found in the Application Guidelines for each scheme.

Max Crawford Medal

The Max Crawford Medal is Australia’s most prestigious award for achievement and promise in the humanities. It is presented to an early career researcher for outstanding achievement in the humanities, whose research and publications make an exceptional contribution to the understanding of their discipline by the general public.

John Mulvaney Fellowship

The John Mulvaney Fellowship is an award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early career researchers and PhD students working in any area of the humanities. The recipient will receive $4000 towards undertaking research or fieldwork in Australia or overseas, including accessing archives and other research materials and connecting with researchers and networks.

Humanities Travelling Fellowships

Our Humanities Travelling Fellowships offer grants of up to $4000 to support Australian early career researchers to undertake research overseas, including accessing archives and other materials and connecting with international researchers and networks.

Publication Subsidy Scheme

One of the Academy’s longest-running award schemes, the Publication Subsidy Scheme supports quality scholarly publication in the humanities. Subsidies of up to $3000 are awarded to early career researchers to support costs associated with publication, such as illustrations, maps, editorial work and copyright fees.
