Summary:

"Internet Archive Scholar: Supporting Perpetual Access to Open Scholarship through Infrastructure and Collaborations

Jefferson Bailey Director, Archiving and Data Services Internet Archive

In 2018, the Internet Archive undertook a large-scale project to contribute its non-profit, open infrastructure and partnership-oriented services and engineering to ensure the perpetual access to at-risk scholarly communication through a mix of technical work, integrations with other open infrastructure providers, and overall partnership and product development. This project briefing will provide updates on Phase Two of the project and its focus on advancing discoverability through systems interoperability and collaboration, including the launch of the Internet Archive Scholar service (scholar.archive.org) and collaborations with other platforms in the scholarly communications ecosystem such as Google Scholar, the Keepers Registry, Center for Open Science, OpenCitations, the joint effort Project Jasper focusing on small open-access journal archiving, and others. The project briefing will also provide updates on: ongoing efforts to archive non-publication scholarly outputs (at scale and via largely automated methods), such as datasets and software; work to integrate newly digitized portions of the scholarly record into the project's workflows; and the available open source suite of tools. The project's strategic goal is to build out non-profit open infrastructure, integrations, and collaborative efforts to ensure the perpetual discoverability and access to scholarship that is at-risk either through resource constraints, barriers to technical capacity, or marginalization from existing commercial or first-world oriented efforts for advancing research communications. The project is working with many non-profit organizations in the open scholarship community as well as with many consortia and universities within, or closely affiliated with, the Coalition for Networked Information membership.
