Summary:

Recently, a colleague contacted me with an interesting question. They were re-running an analysis in Web of Science that had first run about a year ago, and the results were not consistent. Specifically, the rates of Hybrid articles were coming back twice as high as they did before. Did I happen to know a reason for this discrepancy offhand?

The Hybrid section is the top slice in red each time, increasing from ~8% to ~17% across the three data pulls.

We can see [...] the obvious difference is with the first and tallest bar in each year’s grouping—Elsevier. Many Bronze (blue), Green (green), and Closed (orange) articles as reported in 2021 are now classified as Hybrid in 2024. The issue seems to be affecting Elsevier by far the most.
