The workshop focuses on a practical question facing research-performing organisations: how can institutions move beyond using open infrastructures to actively sustaining them?

Topics include:

• An overview of common sustainability and funding models used by infrastructures such as OpenAlex, OpenAIRE, Crossref, ORCID, ROR and DSpace.
• Different forms of institutional support, including financial contributions, governance participation and community contributions.
• Factors that influence institutional investment decisions and barriers to long-term support.
• Concrete examples of OpenAlex and OpenAIRE membership models and the value they provide.
• Discussion of sustainability at ecosystem level, including the potential roles of SURF, UKB, UNL, SHB and Open Science NL within the Dutch landscape.
• System-level initiatives such as SCOSS, Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI), POSI and COMET, with emphasis on governance, funding mechanisms and collective responsibility.
