Summary:

“The UK's Department for International Development ( DFID), a key donor to development projects in India recently offered a welcome shot of transparency. In a bid to make its data more accessible to the public in developing countries, it has introduced a policy that would make it binding on researchers receiving its funding to share their reports and analysis online, at no cost. Its 'Research Open and Enhanced Access Policy' which comes into force from November 1 would require researchers to place their peer-reviewed findings, be they evaluations, research reports, data sets, videos or books in public domain. Interestingly, it would offer the key findings of varied research in local languages as well, ensuring a wider reach. DFID is a key donor investing in India with a budget of over £ 279 million in 2011. It mainly works in the field of poverty alleviation, education, health environmental sustanability and other humanitarian causes, particularly in the eight poorest Indian states including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.”
